CCTV Surveillance Systems Kenya

CCTV in Kenya: quick answers

How much does CCTV cost in Kenya?

A complete 4-channel CCTV kit starts from about KES 20,400 and an 8-channel kit from about KES 35,400 for the equipment. Single Hikvision cameras start from about KES 3,000, DVRs from about KES 4,320 and PTZ cameras from about KES 21,600. Installation is quoted after a site assessment because cable runs and the number of cameras change the price.

Who installs CCTV in Nairobi?

Qyvea Limited installs CCTV for homes, estates, schools, warehouses, factories and offices. Equipment is delivered to the client wherever they are in Kenya, and our technicians install and commission it.

Which CCTV camera should I choose?

Use a Hikvision or Dahua IP or HD camera with night vision for most sites, a PTZ camera for large open yards, and a solar or 4G camera where there is no mains power or network.

How long does installation take?

A home or small shop with 4 cameras is usually installed in one day. Larger sites are scheduled after the site assessment.

Qyvea Limited supplies and installs across Kenya from Nairobi. Equipment is delivered to your site, and installation is booked after a site assessment.

Learn the solution

How a CCTV system works, and what a complete system needs

A CCTV system is a chain: cameras capture the picture, cables carry it with power, a recorder stores it, and a screen or phone lets you watch it. If any link is weak, the whole system is. Here is every part, what it does and how to size it.

How it works, step by step

1CameraCamera
2Cable and PoE switchCable and PoE switch
3Recorder (NVR)Recorder (NVR)
4Hard diskHard disk
5Screen and phone appScreen and phone app

What a complete solution includes

Bullet camera (outdoor)

Bullet camera (outdoor)

Fixed camera with a weatherproof body, for gates, walls and perimeters.

Tip: Choose 4MP or higher with night vision. Colour night cameras cost a little more and give far better evidence.

Dome camera (indoor and ceilings)

Dome camera (indoor and ceilings)

Discreet camera that is hard to tamper with, for shops, offices and corridors.

Tip: Vandal-proof domes suit places people can reach.
See options in the store →
PTZ camera

PTZ camera

Pan-tilt-zoom camera that can follow movement and zoom in on detail.

Tip: Use one PTZ to cover a wide yard, with fixed cameras on the entrances.
See options in the store →
NVR (network recorder)

NVR (network recorder)

Records every IP camera and plays back by date, time or motion.

Tip: Buy one with more channels than you need now: 8 channels for 5 to 8 cameras, 16 for 9 to 16.
See options in the store →
Surveillance hard disk

Surveillance hard disk

Storage built to write 24 hours a day. A normal PC disk fails early.

Tip: Plan about 20 to 40 GB per camera per day. Eight cameras for 30 days needs roughly 8 TB.
See options in the store →
PoE switch

PoE switch

Sends power and picture over one network cable to each camera.

Tip: Pick a switch with 20 to 30% spare ports and enough total power budget.
See options in the store →
Cat6 network cable

Cat6 network cable

Carries power and video from the camera to the switch, up to 100 m per run.

Tip: Insist on pure copper cable. Copper-clad aluminium cable fails in the heat and over distance.

UPS or backup power

UPS or backup power

Keeps cameras and the recorder running through power cuts and surges.

Tip: Size it for the recorder, switch and routers, not just the recorder.

What decides the design

  • Count the places you need to see: every entrance, the perimeter corners, cash points and storage. One camera per place, not per room.
  • Match resolution to the job: faces and number plates need 4MP or more and the right angle. General overview can be 2MP.
  • Measure cable runs. IP cameras on Cat6 reach 100 m; further needs a second switch or fibre.
  • Work out storage: cameras x days of recording x 20 to 40 GB. Add 20% headroom.
  • Decide how you will watch it: a monitor on site, the phone app, or both. Remote viewing needs a stable internet line.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying cameras first and the recorder, disk and cable later. Design the whole system before you buy any part.
  • Using cheap copper-clad cable. Pictures drop out when it is hot or long.
  • Skipping the UPS. Power surges kill recorders more than anything else.
  • Leaving default passwords or opening the recorder to the internet with port forwarding.
  • Mounting too high or into the sun. Aim away from direct sun and keep faces in the middle of the picture.

CCTV installation questions

How much does CCTV installation cost in Kenya?

Cost depends on the number of cameras, cable-run distance, camera specification (analog vs IP, resolution) and site conditions -- there's no single fixed price that fits every site. Qyvea provides a free site survey and an itemised quote showing equipment and labour separately. See CCTV Installation Cost for more detail.

How many cameras does my business need?

This depends on the property's entrances, internal areas, parking and any blind spots around the perimeter -- there's no fixed number that suits every business. A free site survey identifies the actual coverage points that matter (entrances, till points, stock rooms, parking, boundary) so you don't pay for more cameras than the site needs, or end up with gaps.

How much CCTV storage do I need?

Storage depends on the number of cameras, their resolution, how much motion the site has, and how long you want to keep footage. Higher-resolution cameras and busier sites fill storage faster -- we size the NVR/DVR storage during the site survey based on your camera count and desired retention period.

Can CCTV work without internet?

Yes. Recording, local playback and motion detection all work without an internet connection, since footage is stored on the NVR/DVR itself. Internet is only needed for remote viewing from your phone or a cloud backup of footage.

Can I view CCTV remotely?

Yes -- with an internet connection at the site, most modern NVR/DVR systems support a mobile app for viewing live and recorded footage from your phone. This is set up and tested as part of installation and handover.

How long should CCTV recordings be stored?

This depends on your property type and risk profile -- commercial sites commonly keep around 30 days, while residential setups may keep around 14 days. Longer retention needs more storage, and we help size the system for your preferred period during the site survey.

Can Qyvea upgrade an existing CCTV system?

Yes. We assess what's already installed and can add cameras, upgrade the recorder, extend storage or add remote viewing without necessarily replacing everything that already works.

Can you install cameras supplied by another company?

Yes -- we can install customer-supplied cameras, though we'll flag during the site survey if a specific camera isn't well suited to the site (for example, an indoor-rated camera being used outdoors) so you know before installation, not after.

For sites without grid power, we also install solar-powered CCTV cameras -- see how they work.
