What Actually Makes a CCTV Camera "Best"

There's no single best CCTV camera -- the right one depends on where it's going and what you need from it. A few things genuinely matter more than marketing terms:

  • Resolution — 2MP is enough to identify a person's presence; 4MP and 8MP are worth it if you need to read faces, plates or fine detail at a distance.
  • Night vision quality — Colour night vision (ColorVu-type) cameras keep colour detail after dark, which matters far more for identification than a longer infrared spec on paper.
  • IR/night range — Matched to the distance you actually need to see, not the longest number available -- a 30m range camera watching a 5m corridor is wasted spec.
  • Weatherproof rating (IP67) — Essential for anything mounted outdoors in Kenya's rain and dust; less critical indoors.
  • Wired vs Wi-Fi — Wired (PoE) cameras are more reliable for a permanent installation; Wi-Fi suits a quick, no-cabling setup or a rental property.

Common questions

Which CCTV camera is best for a home in Kenya?

For most homes, a 2MP or 4MP ColorVu-type bullet camera at the gate and entrance covers the essentials well. A 4-camera starter kit is often the most cost-effective way to cover a whole compound at once.

Is a more expensive CCTV camera always better?

Not necessarily -- price often reflects resolution, night-vision quality and IR range. A KES 30,000 camera isn't "better" for a spot where a KES 8,500 one already sees everything you need.

Do I need a recorder (NVR/DVR) separately?

Individual cameras usually need a separate NVR or DVR to record continuously, unless you buy a complete kit that already includes one, like the starter kit above.

Can I install CCTV myself?

Basic Wi-Fi cameras can often be self-installed. Wired, multi-camera systems typically need professional cabling and configuration to work reliably -- we can quote for installation on any camera you buy.
