Automatic Gate Installation Kenya

Automatic gates in Kenya: quick answers

How much does an automatic gate cost in Kenya?

Gate motors and parking systems start from about KES 62,230 for the equipment on larger systems. The price depends on gate type (sliding or swing), gate weight and accessories such as remotes, safety beams and a battery backup. We quote after seeing the gate.

Sliding or swing gate motor: which is better?

Sliding motors suit gates that slide along a wall and need less clear space. Swing motors suit double gates with space to open inward or outward. Gate weight sets the motor size.

Learn the solution

How an automatic gate works, and what a complete system needs

A gate motor drives the gate along a rack or swings it on arms. A control board decides when to open and close, using remotes, intercoms or sensors. Safety devices stop the gate when something is in the way.

What a complete solution includes

Gate motor

Gate motor

Drives the gate. Sliding motors use a rack; swing motors use arms.

Tip: Choose by gate weight and length, with a margin. Heavy gates need heavy-duty motors.

Gear rack

Gear rack

The toothed bar fixed to a sliding gate that the motor pushes along.

Tip: Install it straight and level; a poor rack wears the motor.

Remotes and keypad

Remotes and keypad

Open the gate from a vehicle or at the pedestrian entrance.

Tip: Add a keypad or phone control so visitors do not need a remote.
See options in the store →
Safety photocells

Safety photocells

Infrared beam that stops the gate if something crosses it.

Tip: Required on every automatic gate for the safety of children and pets.

Warning lamp

Flashes when the gate is moving.

Tip: Required for safety and for neighbours to notice the gate moving.

Backup battery

Backup battery

Keeps the gate working during power cuts.

Tip: Choose a battery that can do at least 10 to 20 cycles.

Intercom

Intercom

Lets you see and speak to visitors and open the gate from inside.

Tip: Choose a video intercom that can release the gate relay.

Electric lock (swing gates)

Electric lock (swing gates)

Holds a swing gate closed against wind and force.

Tip: Add it on any gate that faces a public road.

What decides the design

  • Weigh or estimate the gate weight and measure its width. The motor must be rated above it.
  • Check space: a sliding gate needs a free run at least equal to the gate length plus a bit.
  • Decide the opening speed and number of daily cycles. Busy estates need heavy-duty motors.
  • Plan power: mains point close to the motor, with battery or solar backup.
  • Decide how people will open it: remotes, keypad, intercom, phone, number plate recognition.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • A motor too small for the gate. It overheats and fails early.
  • No photocells. A gate that closes on a car or a child is a serious liability.
  • Rails and gate not level, so the motor works against gravity.
  • No backup power, so the gate is stuck shut or open in a power cut.
  • Not fitting a manual release key and showing the owner how to use it.

Automatic gate questions

How much does automatic gate installation cost in Kenya?

Cost depends on the gate type (sliding vs swing), gate size and weight, the motor capacity needed, and whether new safety sensors, wiring or gate structure work are required. Qyvea provides a free site survey and itemised quote covering the motor, installation and any additional hardware.

Sliding gate vs swing gate -- which is better?

Sliding gates run along a track and suit properties with limited clearance in front of the gate, and handle heavier weights more easily. Swing gates open like a door and need enough space to swing clear, but often suit a more traditional gate design. The right choice depends on your driveway layout, which we assess during the site survey.

What size gate motor do I need?

Motor size depends on the gate's actual weight and length, not just its type -- a heavier or longer gate needs a higher-capacity motor. Undersizing a motor causes premature wear and unreliable operation, so we measure the gate before recommending a specific motor. See our CENTURION sliding and swing motor pages for example weight ratings.

What happens to the gate during a power outage?

Every automatic gate installation includes a manual release lever so the gate can be opened by hand during an outage. Motors with battery backup can also continue operating electronically through short power cuts.

Can a gate motor work with solar?

Yes -- a small solar trickle-charge panel can maintain the gate motor's battery, keeping it powered without relying on grid electricity, which is useful for gates far from the main electrical supply or in areas with frequent outages.

Can access control operate my gate?

Yes -- access control readers (keypad, RFID tag, biometric or intercom-linked release) connect to the gate motor's control board the same way a remote control does, so the gate opens automatically when correct credentials are presented. See Access Control for Residential Gates for detail.

How often should an automatic gate be serviced?

Gates used daily benefit from periodic servicing -- checking the chain or rack, safety sensor alignment, control board condition and battery health. We generally recommend a check every 6-12 months depending on usage, more frequently for high-traffic commercial gates. See Automatic Gate Maintenance.
