Electric Fence Systems Kenya

Electric fencing in Kenya: quick answers

How much does an electric fence cost in Kenya?

The energizer, the main part of the system, starts from about KES 5,500 and razor wire from about KES 1,490. The final price depends on the perimeter length, the number of strands and the posts, so we quote after measuring the site.

Is an electric fence safe?

A correctly installed energizer gives a short, non-lethal pulse, and warning signs are fitted on the perimeter. The energizer is the main safety control, so use a certified unit and have it installed properly.

Learn the solution

How an electric fence works, and what a complete system needs

An electric fence is a deterrent and an alarm in one. An energiser sends a short high-voltage, low-current pulse along wires on the wall. If someone touches, cuts or climbs over the wires, the voltage changes and the alarm sounds.

What a complete solution includes

Energiser

Energiser

Creates the pulse and watches the line for faults.

Tip: Choose an energiser rated for the length of fence. Too small and the voltage drops on long runs.

Fence wire and insulators

Fence wire and insulators

Stainless or galvanised wire held off the wall by insulators.

Tip: Use proper high-tension wire and strained posts, not loose wire.

Outriggers (arms)

Outriggers (arms)

Brackets that hold the wires above a wall or fence.

Tip: Choose the right arm for the wall top and number of wires.

Siren and strobe

Siren and strobe

Sounds and flashes when the fence is touched or cut.

Tip: Position a strobe where neighbours and guards can see it.

Control keypad

Control keypad

Arms and disarms the fence and shows which zone alarmed.

Tip: Zone the fence into sections so you know where the intruder is.

Earthing

Earthing

A buried earth rod system that completes the circuit.

Tip: Poor earthing is the most common cause of a weak or faulty fence.

Backup battery

Backup battery

Keeps the fence live during power cuts.

Tip: Size it for at least a full night of operation.

Warning signs

Warning signs

Required to warn people the fence is energised.

Tip: Place one at regular intervals along the fence.

What decides the design

  • Measure the perimeter and note corners, gates and any places where the fence meets trees or buildings.
  • Decide the number of wires: more wires means a stronger deterrent.
  • Divide the fence into zones, one for each side or gate.
  • Plan earthing at several points and away from other earths.
  • Plan power: mains with a battery backup, or solar where there is no mains.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Letting vegetation touch the wires. It causes false alarms and weak voltage.
  • One zone for the whole fence, so you never know where the alarm is.
  • Bad earthing. Test it and keep it moist.
  • No signs. Signs are both a deterrent and a legal requirement.
  • Using an energiser that is too small for the fence length.
