Solar Street Light vs Solar Flood Light: What Is the Difference?

By Qyvea Limited · Updated 20 October 2026 · 2 min read

People in Kenya often use "street light", "flood light" and "security light" for the same thing. They are related but not identical. Choosing the right type saves money and gives better results.

Solar street lights

Street lights are designed to light a road, walkway or wide area from a pole, with light spread along the ground. All-in-one street lights, like ours, include the panel, battery and sensor in one unit.

Solar flood lights

Flood lights give a wide, bright wash of light over a space and are often mounted on walls to light a yard, building or sign. Many have a separate or attached panel.

Which to choose

In practice

The lines blur. A large all-in-one solar street light with a wide LED face works as a flood light, and our customers use it for yards and parking. If you are unsure, describe your site to us and we will recommend the right one.

In short: Street lights suit poles and roads, flood lights suit walls and yards. Large all-in-ones do both jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a flood light brighter?
