How Do Solar Street Lights Work? A Simple Guide for Kenya
A solar street light looks simple: a panel on top, a lamp below, a pole under it. Inside it is a neat system that turns sunshine into light after dark with no cable and no meter. Here is how it works.
Daytime: charging
The solar panel turns sunlight into electricity. A controller sends that electricity into a battery and stops charging when the battery is full, which protects it. On a clear Kenyan day there is plenty of sun for this.
Dusk: switching on
A light sensor notices when the day is ending and switches the lamp on by itself. You do not need a switch, a timer or a person.

Many lights, including ours, stay at a low glow to save battery. A radar motion sensor spots a person or vehicle near the light and takes the lamp to full brightness, then drops back when the movement stops.
Dawn: back to charging
When daylight returns the lamp switches off and the panel starts charging again. The cycle repeats every day with no input from you, as long as the panel is clean and in the sun.
Frequently asked questions
Does it need any wiring?
No. An all-in-one solar light has its panel built in and runs on its own battery.
What happens in a blackout?
Nothing. The light does not depend on KPLC.
