Security System Backup Power in Kenya

Why security systems need dedicated backup power

In Kenya, most break-ins happen during power outages. When the grid drops, CCTV stops recording, electric fences lose their pulse, gates default to manual override, and alarm panels go silent. The security system a business or homeowner paid for — sometimes hundreds of thousands of shillings — becomes decorative at exactly the moment it matters most.

Qyvea Limited designs dedicated backup power for security systems across Kenya — sized to the specific loads of CCTV, electric fence, automatic gates, access control and alarms. Smaller and cheaper than whole-home solar, because it only powers what needs protecting.

Standalone vs integrated backup

• Standalone security backup — a dedicated solar + battery + inverter system that only powers your security loads. Smaller, cheaper, and installed without touching the house wiring.
• Integrated with home or business solar — if you already have solar or plan to install it, security loads can be given a priority circuit so they stay powered even when other loads are shed to preserve battery.
• Generator + battery hybrid — for larger facilities with existing generators, backup can bridge the gap until the generator starts and stabilise the transition.
• Retrofit onto existing systems — we add backup to existing CCTV, fence, gate and alarm installations without replacing them.

Common questions about security backup power

Why do security systems need backup power?

Most burglaries and intrusions in Kenya happen during power outages — when CCTV is off, electric fences are down, gates are on manual override and alarms are silent. Backup power keeps security systems running through KPLC outages, so the protection you paid for is actually there when it matters most.

What security systems can be backed up with solar?

CCTV and NVRs, electric fence energizers, automatic gate motors, access control and intercoms, alarm panels, and perimeter lighting. Qyvea designs dedicated backup for these loads — sized to the actual security system consumption, not the whole house.

How long can backup power keep my security system running?

It depends on the battery bank and the security load. A well-designed system typically keeps CCTV, fence and gates running for 12 to 48 hours on battery alone, and indefinitely when the sun is available to recharge. Qyvea sizes the battery against your specific security loads and how long you want protection to last.

Can I add backup power to my existing security system?

Yes. Qyvea retrofits backup power onto existing CCTV, fence, gate and alarm installations — whether we installed them or not. We review the existing system's power draw, then design a backup solution sized correctly for it.

Is security system backup power different from a home solar system?

Yes and no. Both use panels, an inverter and batteries, but security backup is smaller and dedicated — it only powers the security loads, so it's cheaper, simpler and can be installed as a standalone system without touching the house wiring. For homes or businesses that already want solar for other purposes, we integrate security backup into the main system.
