01. Typical appliance wattages02. What each inverter size runs03. How long will it last?04. FAQ
Add up the watts of everything you want running at the same time and keep the total below about 80% of the inverter rating. A 600 W inverter runs lights, a TV, a decoder, Wi-Fi and phone chargers. A 1000 W inverter adds a small fridge or a laptop setup. Irons, kettles, cookers and water heaters need 2–3 kW or more and drain batteries fast.
Key takeaways
- Keep running load under ~80% of the rating.
- Fridges and pumps need surge capacity to start.
- Heating appliances need big inverters and big batteries.
- Inverter watts decide what runs; battery size decides for how long.
- Use pure sine wave inverters.
01Typical appliance wattages
| Appliance | Typical running power |
|---|---|
| LED bulb | 5–12 W |
| Wi-Fi router | 6–15 W |
| 4-camera CCTV with DVR | 30–60 W |
| 32–43 inch LED TV + decoder | 50–120 W |
| Laptop | 45–90 W |
| Fridge | 100–200 W (higher at start) |
| Microwave | 800–1,200 W |
| Iron | 1,000–2,000 W |
| Kettle | 1,500–2,200 W |
02What each inverter size runs
| Inverter | Comfortably runs |
|---|---|
| 600 W | Lights, TV, decoder, Wi-Fi, phones, CCTV |
| 1000 W | The above plus a small fridge or laptops |
| 3 kW | Most of a home except big heaters at the same time; short microwave use |
| 5 kW | Whole home including occasional iron or kettle, with enough battery |
03How long will it last?
Battery hours = usable battery energy ÷ load. A 2.4 kWh lithium battery running a 200 W load lasts roughly 10–11 hours, allowing for inverter losses. Use our sizing guide to work out yours.
04Frequently asked questions
Can a 1000W inverter run a fridge?
Usually yes, if it has enough surge capacity for the compressor start and other loads are small.
Can a 1000W inverter run an iron?
Most irons draw more than 1,000 W, so no.
Does a bigger inverter drain batteries faster?
Slightly, through idle consumption; the load you run is what drains the battery.
