How to choose a PoE switch
- PoE budget: add up the watts of every device (an IP camera uses about 4–7W; a PTZ or access point more) and leave headroom.
- Standard: 802.3af (PoE) or 802.3at (PoE+) for most devices; PTZ cameras may need PoE+ or higher.
- Long cable runs: extended-range (250m) modes help on large compounds.
- Managed or unmanaged: managed switches add VLANs and remote monitoring for larger sites.
