Resident access control decides who can open which gate, door or lift, and when. In an estate, the hard part isn't the reader: it's keeping the list of who's allowed in accurate as residents move in, move out and change cars.

It's the resident layer of Qyvea's integrated estate security platform.

Credential options

CredentialBest forWatch out for
FingerprintResidents and staff: can't be lent or lostWorn or wet fingers; place readers out of direct sun
Face recognitionHands-free entry, high trafficLighting at the reader; data-protection obligations
Card / fobSimple, familiar, cheap to replaceLost or lent cards: must be disabled promptly
PINBackup credential, temporary accessCodes get shared: change them regularly
Mobile / QRVisitors and temporary passesNeeds the visitor system and connectivity

One resident database

Every credential (fingerprint, card, tag, plate) is linked to a unit in one database. When a resident moves out, one action removes all of their access everywhere, instead of someone remembering every reader.

Rules the estate can set

  • Time schedules (e.g. domestic workers on weekdays only)
  • Which gates or doors each person can use
  • Anti-passback where appropriate
  • Holiday and after-hours rules
  • Access logs for every entry
  • Instant disabling of lost cards

For pedestrian gates, see estate intercom & pedestrian access. For apartment blocks, see access control for apartments.

Common Questions

What happens when a resident loses their card?

The card is disabled in the resident database straight away and a new one is issued. No locks need changing.

Can staff access also track attendance?

Yes. Biometric access for estate staff can also feed a time and attendance system.

Is face recognition allowed?

It can be used where appropriate, with the obligations of Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019 in mind, including telling people and protecting the data.
