Gate Motor Not Closing — Causes and Fixes
A gate that opens but will not close, or closes and then opens again, is one of the most common calls we get. In most cases the motor is fine and something is telling it to stop. Work through these checks before calling a technician.
Check these first
- Safety beams — the most common cause. If the beam is blocked, dirty or misaligned (after a knock or heavy rain), the gate will not close or will re-open. Clean the lenses and check nothing is in the way.
- Obstruction — stones or debris in the track, or a leaf rubbing on the ground, make the motor sense a collision and reverse.
- Battery — a weak battery can open the gate but not push it closed. See gate motor batteries.
- Limits — if the closed limit was lost (often after a power surge), the gate stops short.
- Remote held down / stuck button — a stuck remote or exit button keeps sending "open".
When to call us
If the checks above don't fix it, the controller settings or wiring need a technician. We carry beams, batteries and remotes on the van.

Why does my gate open again after closing?
Usually the safety beam is blocked or misaligned, or the motor senses an obstruction. Clean and align the beams and clear the track first.
Why does my gate stop before fully closing?
The closed limit may be set wrong or lost, the battery may be weak, or something is dragging on the gate.
