How to Open an Automatic Gate Manually
Every automatic gate motor has a manual release (override) so the gate can be opened by hand in a power cut or breakdown. Here is how it works and how to use it safely.
Using the manual release
- Find the release — usually a lockable lever or key on the motor housing (sliding motors) or on the operator (swing motors).
- Unlock and release — insert the key and turn or lift the lever; this disconnects the motor gears.
- Move the gate gently — slide or swing it by hand. Don't slam it against the end stops.
- Re-engage — when power is back, close the lever and move the gate slightly until the gears catch. Lock the release so it can't be tampered with.
Safety: keep children away while the gate is released, and never release a gate on a slope without holding it — it can run away.
Avoid it altogether: battery and solar backup
Battery-driven motors (such as the Centurion Vantage) keep working through outages. A healthy battery, and a solar panel where power is unreliable, means you rarely need the manual release.

How getting your gate automated works
- Free site surveyA Qyvea technician checks the gate weight and track, the power point and where the beams go. The gate must run freely by hand first; we tell you if it needs fixing.
- Itemised quoteYou get every line in writing: motor, rack or brackets, safety beams, remotes, cabling and labour. No surprises on the day.
- Install & hand-overWe fit and test the motor, set the limits and auto-close, pair your remotes or app, and show you the manual release for power cuts.

Frequently asked questions
I lost the manual release key — what now?
We can supply a replacement key or release mechanism for most motors; send us the model.
Why won't my gate move after I re-engaged the release?
The gears may not have caught — move the gate a little by hand until they engage. If the motor was left released, the controller may also need its limits re-learned.
