# Structured Cabling Kenya

Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A and fibre optic cabling for Kenyan offices, data centres and commercial buildings — laid out to a standard pattern, tested link-by-link, and documented before handover.

## Who installs structured cabling in Kenya?

[Qyvea Limited](https://qyvea.co.ke/) designs and installs structured cabling for offices, banks, schools, hospitals, warehouses and data centres across Kenya. A cabling installation is only as good as the design behind it — so the work starts with an outlet schedule, a containment plan and a fibre or copper backbone that will still be serviceable in five years, not just on day one.

Scope

## What a structured cabling project covers

### Copper horizontal cabling

Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6A from the floor distributor to each desk outlet, terminated on RJ45 modules or keystone jacks.

### Fibre optic backbone

Single-mode or multi-mode fibre between buildings, floors and server rooms. Terminated on LC or SC patch panels and tested.

### Containment & trays

Cable trays, trunking, conduit and floor boxes so cables are protected, labelled and accessible.

### Patch panels & cabinets

Wall-mount or floor-standing cabinets, patch panels, cable management and PDU installation.

### Terminations & labelling

Every outlet, patch panel port and cable end is labelled to a standard scheme and documented.

### Testing & certification

Every link tested for length, attenuation, NEXT and return loss. You receive the certification report.

Cable categories

## Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A or fibre?

- **Cat5e** — budget option for 1 Gbps up to 100 m. Fine for phones, printers and low-density offices.
- **Cat6** — the standard choice for new office cabling. 1 Gbps to 100 m, 10 Gbps up to 55 m. Handles Wi-Fi 6 access points comfortably.
- **Cat6A** — 10 Gbps to the full 100 m. Used in data centres, finance, healthcare and any site likely to run 10 Gbps to the desk.
- **Multi-mode fibre (OM3/OM4)** — backbone links inside a building or between nearby buildings.
- **Single-mode fibre (OS2)** — long-distance runs between sites, campuses or across counties.

Qyvea recommends a category based on how the site will actually be used — not just what is cheapest. Detail on the wider networking stack is on our [Networking](https://qyvea.co.ke/networking) page.

Standards

## Standards we work to

Structured cabling is installed to recognised industry standards so it remains serviceable, testable and warranty-supported:

- TIA/EIA-568 — the cabling standard defining channel, permanent link and component performance
- ISO/IEC 11801 — the international equivalent
- TIA/EIA-606 — labelling and administration of the cabling system
- TIA/EIA-569 — pathways and spaces (trays, conduits, floor boxes, cabinets)
- Local electrical safety requirements for containment, earthing and separation from power

Process

## How a structured cabling project runs

1

### Free site survey

We walk the site, count outlets, plot cable routes and check existing containment.

2

### Design & quote

Outlet schedule, cable category, containment, cabinets and test plan are itemised.

3

### Installation

Cables pulled, terminated, labelled and dressed. Work is scheduled around business hours.

4

### Test & handover

Every link tested. You receive the certification report and as-built layout.

FAQ

## Common questions from businesses

What is structured cabling?

Structured cabling is the underlying cable system inside a building that carries data, voice and video. It is organised into a standard layout — a main distribution area, floor distributors, and horizontal cabling to each outlet — so that any outlet can be patched to any service.

Should I use Cat6 or fibre optic cabling?

Cat6 or Cat6A copper is the usual choice for desk outlets and horizontal cabling up to 90 metres. Fibre is used for backbone links between floors, buildings, server rooms and switches, and anywhere distances exceed copper limits or electrical isolation matters.

How long does structured cabling installation take?

A single-floor office fit-out typically takes 3 to 7 working days. Multi-floor buildings, data centres and sites with containment, tray or conduit work take longer. Qyvea provides a schedule during the site survey.

Do you certify the cabling after installation?

Yes. Every link is tested and documented. You receive a certification report with pass/fail results, length, attenuation and NEXT values per outlet — useful for warranty and future fault-finding.

How much does structured cabling cost in Kenya?

Cost depends on the number of outlets, cable category, containment work, distance between floors, and whether the site is new-build or occupied. Qyvea provides a free site survey and itemised quote before any work begins.

Do you install outside Nairobi?

Yes. Qyvea is a Nairobi-based, delivery-only supplier, and installs across Kenya including Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Thika, Ruiru and Kiambu.

Sample Project

## Network cabinet redone, clean

### Network Cabinet Redone for Clean Cable Management

A network cabinet redone from scratch: cables re-terminated, routed and dressed so every link is tidy, labelled and easy to trace.

- Cables re-terminated and neatly dressed
- Patch panel and switch organised and labelled
- Faster fault-finding and better airflow
