A mixer blends and controls the sources; an amplifier makes the signal strong enough to drive the speakers. Can everyone hear you, clearly, in every corner? Read on: it takes a few minutes and could save you a lot more than that. **In this guide you will see:** - Mixer: levels and tone for each source. - Amplifier: power for passive speakers. - Active speakers need only a mixer. Quick answer A mixer takes microphones and music sources, lets you set the level and tone for each, and combines them. An amplifier takes that signal and makes it powerful enough to drive passive speakers. Active speakers have the amplifier built in, so you may need only a mixer. A mixer-amplifier (powered mixer) puts both in one box, which suits small installs. Count every microphone and source, then add a few spare. Eight to twelve suits many churches. What is a powered mixer? A mixer with an amplifier built in. It saves space and cabling but limits upgrades. Do I need an equaliser? Most mixers include basic tone controls; extra equalisers help in difficult rooms. Where do effects fit?
