K9 units

## A dog and a handler, working as one team

A K9 unit is not a dog left loose in a yard. It is a dog that works with one handler, who directs it, controls it and is responsible for it. Together they patrol perimeters, cover open ground quickly and act as a deterrent that people can see and hear before they ever reach a fence.

K9 units work best alongside guards and physical security: a boundary and lighting to define the site, cameras to record what happens, and guards at the gates. See the wider picture on our [guards, K9 and escorts](https://qyvea.co.ke/security-guards) page.

Where K9 helps

## Sites that suit a K9 unit

Dogs are most useful where there is ground to cover and the risk is at night.

#### Storage yards & depots

Large open areas with stock or vehicles, where a guard on foot cannot see everywhere.

#### Warehouses & factories

Overnight cover around buildings, loading bays and perimeter fences.

#### Construction sites

Materials and plant on open, changing ground. See our [construction site security](https://qyvea.co.ke/construction-site-security-guards-kenya).

#### Farms & large plots

Perimeters that are long and poorly lit, where a person alone is easily outmatched.

#### Business parks & compounds

Open commercial grounds with several buildings and after-hours risk.

#### Vacant land & project sites

Undeveloped plots where the only protection is being seen to be watched.

Planned around people

## Dogs and people on the same site

A dog is a serious responsibility. Before any unit is posted we agree with you the areas it covers, the areas it does not, how staff and visitors are kept out of its way and what signage goes up. The plan is written down so everyone on site knows it.

- Agreed patrol zones and no-go areas
- Signage at entrances and along the route
- A separate access route for staff and visitors
- Shelter, shade and water for the dog on site
- The handler is always present — the dog is never left unattended

How it works

## From assessment to first patrol

### Suitability assessment

We check whether your site suits a K9 unit at all — not every site does.

### Zones & rules

Patrol areas, no-go areas, signage and access routes agreed in writing.

### Unit posted

A dog and its handler start, briefed on your site and your staff.

### Review

We review what is working and adjust the zones and hours.

What we need from you

## Setting up a site for a K9 unit

- **Lighting on the patrol routes** — Handlers and dogs work better, and safer, when they can see.
- **A defined boundary** — A fence or wall, or a clearly marked area, so the unit knows where its ground ends.
- **Shelter and shade** — For the dog and handler during the shift.
- **A named contact on site** — Someone who can answer questions and receive reports.
- **A way to brief staff and visitors** — Everyone who comes to the site should know a dog patrols it.

FAQ

## Common Questions

What is the difference between a guard dog and a K9 unit?

A guard dog on its own is an animal left to protect an area, which is unpredictable and risky. A K9 unit is a dog that works under the direct control of a handler. The handler decides when and how the dog is used.

Which breeds do you use?

German Shepherds and other working breeds, chosen to suit the site and the role rather than for looks.

Are K9 units safe around my staff and visitors?

They can be, when the deployment is planned: agreed zones, signage and separate access routes for people. We go through this with you before any unit is posted.

Can a dog replace my guards?

No. A dog covers ground and deters, but it cannot log visitors, operate a gate or call for help. That is why we deploy K9 units alongside guards.

Do dogs work in rain and heat?

Dogs need shelter, shade, water and rest. We plan shifts around the dog's welfare, which is one more reason a K9 unit works with a handler and with guards rather than alone.
