A rule of thumb you can apply with a tape measure, and when to ask for a survey. Can everyone hear you, clearly, in every corner? Read on: it takes a few minutes and could save you a lot more than that. **In this guide you will see:** - About one speaker per 10 to 15 m2 for background music. - Higher ceilings need more speakers. - More speakers at lower volume sounds better than fewer, louder ones. Quick answer For background music, a common rule of thumb is one ceiling speaker for every 10 to 15 square metres, spaced roughly three to four metres apart under a normal ceiling. Speech announcements, noisy rooms and high ceilings need more speakers, closer together. Treat the number as a starting point and confirm with the speaker's coverage rating or a site survey. Yes. Speakers spread their sound in a cone, so the higher the ceiling, the wider the area each one covers but the less direct the sound. As a rule of thumb, three to four metres apart suits a normal ceiling. Is it better to have more, smaller speakers? Usually. More speakers at lower volume give even coverage without loud spots under each speaker. What about the amplifier? Add up the power each speaker is tapped at, then choose an amplifier with 20 to 30 per cent headroom.
