What H.265 saves over H.264, and what the '+' versions add. Most people only find out what their cameras missed on the day they needed them. Read on: it takes a few minutes and could save you a lot more than that. **In this guide you will see:** - H.265 usually saves significant storage and bandwidth over H.264. - Smart codecs (H.265+) save most on static scenes; busy scenes save less. - Check that the recorder, software and viewing devices support H.265. Quick answer Compression shrinks video before it's recorded. H.265 (HEVC) is the newer standard and typically needs noticeably less data than H.264 for similar quality, often around half in favourable scenes. H.265+ and similar 'smart' codecs go further by recording static backgrounds less often, which helps most on quiet scenes. [Photo: Alan J. Compression keeps a full picture only occasionally (key frames) and in between stores only what changed. Better compression means more days on the same drives and smoother remote viewing on slower connections. ## The comparison | | H.264 | H.265 | H.265+ (smart codec) | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Age | Older, universal | Newer (HEVC) | Hikvision enhancement on H.265 | | Data for similar quality | Baseline | Often around half in favourable scenes | Lower still on static scenes | | Compatibility | Plays almost anywhere | Most modern devices | Needs compatible recorder/software | | Best for | Mixed older systems | Most new installations | Quiet scenes: offices at night, perimeters | **Did you know?**: Savings depend heavily on the scene. A busy road or trees blowing in the wind changes every frame, so compression can't save as much as on a still corridor. ## Putting the savings to work The storage saved can extend retention (30 days instead of 14), allow higher resolution, or reduce hard-drive cost. If your recorder and viewing apps support it, usually yes: it saves storage and bandwidth. Is H.265 lower quality than H.264? Not at the same bitrate. H.265 is more efficient, giving similar or better quality with less data. Why does my old software not play H.265 footage? Older players and some browsers don't support H.265. Use the manufacturer's player or export in a compatible format. ## Why customers choose Qyvea **Genuine brands**: Manufacturer warranty on what we sell, so you are not gambling on the box. **One team, start to finish**: The people who advise you also install and support it. **Fast answers**: WhatsApp replies usually within 30 minutes, and delivery within 24 hours in Nairobi. **Easy to buy**: Pay by M-Pesa, bank transfer or card.
