Speed, reliability, dirty or worn fingers, lighting and data protection compared. If two people can clock in for one, your payroll is a guess. Read on: it takes a few minutes and could save you a lot more than that. **In this guide you will see:** - Fingerprint: affordable, reliable for office staff, weaker for manual workers. - Face: hands-free, fast, better for high traffic and hygiene. - Many modern terminals support both, plus card and PIN as backup. Quick answer Fingerprint readers are proven and affordable but struggle with dirty, wet or worn fingers. Face recognition is hands-free and fast for busy entrances, but needs sensible lighting and placement. Both are biometric data, so both must be handled in line with Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019. Real products, live prices, in stock now ## Key takeaways - Fingerprint: affordable, reliable for office staff, weaker for manual workers. - Face: hands-free, fast, better for high traffic and hygiene. - Many modern terminals support both, plus card and PIN as backup. - Placement and lighting decide real-world accuracy. ## Head-to-head | Factor | Fingerprint | Face recognition | | --- | --- | --- | | Speed at busy times | Good | Very good: no contact, walk up and go | | Hygiene | Contact required | Contactless | | Manual workers (worn/dirty fingers) | Can struggle | Usually unaffected | | Lighting sensitivity | Low | Needs sensible lighting; avoid direct sun and backlight | | Cost | Lower | Higher | | Best fit | Offices, small teams, doors | Factories, construction, high-traffic entrances | ## Environment matters - Construction, factories and farms: face recognition copes better with dirty or worn fingers - Offices: fingerprint is usually reliable and cost-effective - Outdoor gates: shade the reader from direct sun; weather-rated terminals only - Very busy shifts: face terminals clear queues faster ## Data protection **Important**: Fingerprints and face data are personal (sensitive) data under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019. Tell staff what is collected and why, protect the system, limit access to the data and delete it when someone leaves. ## See it in a real installation ### ZKTeco Fingerprint Attendance Check-In An employee checks in on a ZKTeco fingerprint attendance terminal: finger on the reader, match, and a Check-In recorded with the date and time. Both are accurate when installed and enrolled properly. Real-world accuracy depends more on the environment and placement than the technology. Can one device do both? Yes. Many terminals support face, fingerprint, card and PIN together. Why does the reader reject my fingerprint? Common causes are dry, wet, dirty or worn fingers, poor enrolment or a dirty sensor.
