CCTV Technology Explained

# DVR vs NVR: What's the Difference?

Quick Answer

A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) records analog/HD camera signals delivered over coaxial cable. An NVR (Network Video Recorder) records IP camera video streams delivered over a network. The recorder has to match the camera type -- an NVR can't record an analog camera's signal, and a DVR can't record IP camera network streams (without a hybrid model designed to do both).

## What Each Recorder Actually Does

Both devices do the same basic job -- take video from cameras and store it for later review or live viewing. The difference is entirely about the type of signal coming in.

- **DVR** -- receives an analog or HD-TVI (Turbo HD) signal over coaxial cable from each camera and digitizes/records it. See our [HD vs IP comparison](https://qyvea.co.ke/hd-cctv-vs-ip-cctv-kenya) for the camera side of this.
- **NVR** -- receives an already-digital video stream from each IP camera over the network and records it. Many NVRs also supply power to the cameras via built-in PoE ports.

## Comparison

| Factor | DVR | NVR |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Camera type | Analog / HD-TVI (coax) | IP cameras (network) |
| Cabling to cameras | Coaxial + separate power cable | Single Cat6/PoE cable (power + data) |
| Camera power | Powered separately, not by the DVR | Often powered directly by the NVR's PoE ports |
| Typical resolution | Up to 5MP (Turbo HD models) | 4MP-8MP+ commonly available |
| Setup complexity | Simpler -- plug and record | Slightly more setup -- IP addressing, network config |
| Mixing camera brands | Works with any compatible analog/HD-TVI camera | Best results with ONVIF-compliant or same-brand cameras |

## Storage Differences

Storage sizing works the same way conceptually for both -- it depends on camera count, resolution, compression and retention period. See our [CCTV storage calculator guide](https://qyvea.co.ke/cctv-storage-calculator-guide-kenya) for the actual formula and a working calculator. In practice, NVR systems often need more storage per camera since IP cameras commonly run at higher resolutions than HD analog cameras.

## Which Do You Need?

This isn't really a choice made independently -- it follows directly from whether you're installing (or already have) analog/HD-TVI cameras or IP cameras. If you're starting fresh and deciding between camera technologies, see our [HD vs IP CCTV comparison](https://qyvea.co.ke/hd-cctv-vs-ip-cctv-kenya) to decide that first -- the recorder choice follows automatically.

FAQ

## Questions

Can a DVR be upgraded to an NVR?

No -- they're different hardware built for different camera signal types. Moving from DVR to NVR means replacing the recorder (and usually the cameras and cabling too, since IP cameras need network cabling).

Do NVRs need a separate PoE switch?

Not always -- many NVRs sold for smaller installations have built-in PoE ports that power the cameras directly. Larger installations often use a separate PoE switch for more ports and flexibility.

Which has better picture quality, DVR or NVR?

The recorder itself doesn't create picture quality -- that comes from the camera. NVRs are simply more commonly paired with higher-resolution IP cameras, which is why IP/NVR systems are often associated with better image quality.

How many cameras can one recorder handle?

Both DVRs and NVRs come in different channel counts -- common options include 4, 8, 16 and 32-channel models. Choose based on your actual camera count plus some room to grow.
