# CCTV Camera Not Recording? We'll Find Out Why

A camera can show a live picture perfectly while recording nothing at all. We check storage, recording schedule, and hardware to find the actual cause.

## Live View Working Doesn't Mean Recording Is Working

These are often two separate things. A camera can feed a perfectly good live picture to your phone while the recorder isn't actually saving anything — usually a storage, schedule, or configuration problem rather than the camera itself.

Likely Causes

## Why CCTV Stops Recording

The most common causes we find when a system has stopped saving footage.

### Full or Failing Storage

Hard drive full, corrupted, or physically failing.

### Recording Schedule Misconfigured

Motion-only or time-based schedules set incorrectly.

### Camera Feed Issue

A camera showing live view but not actually reaching the recorder correctly.

### Recorder Software Fault

DVR/NVR software glitch stopping the recording process.

### Overwritten Footage

Storage cycling faster than expected due to settings or drive size.

### Firmware Issues

Outdated or corrupted firmware affecting recording function.

FAQ

## Common Questions

Why would my camera show live view but no recordings?

This usually points to a storage, schedule, or recorder-software issue rather than the camera itself — we check each.

Can old footage be recovered if the drive has partially failed?

Sometimes, depending on how the drive failed — we assess this on-site and tell you honestly what is and isn't recoverable.

Is this covered under a maintenance contract?

Yes — recording checks are part of what we test on a scheduled maintenance visit, which is exactly how this kind of fault gets caught early.

Do you fix this remotely or does it need a site visit?

Some configuration issues can be diagnosed remotely; storage and hardware faults need a site visit.

## Still Need This Sorted?

Send us the details and we'll diagnose it properly -- remotely where we can, with a site visit where we can't.
